Kodiak Arts Council

The Kodiak Arts Council is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, founded in 1963, with a mission to create opportunities for the people of Kodiak to experience and participate in the arts. We seek to improve the quality of life in Kodiak through our major programs.

Kodiak College

Kodiak College is part of the University of Alaska statewide system of public higher education. In 1987 it changed from its previous designation as a community college to an extended college of the University of Alaska Anchorage and University of Alaska Southeast. With a local focus and global connections, Kodiak College is a student-centered, vibrant community of learners. Kodiak College puts students first through innovative teaching, individualized support, and responsive service to community needs.

Kodiak History Museum

The Kodiak History Museum operates as a partnership between the Kodiak Historical Society and the City of Kodiak, working to preserve and share Kodiak’s history. Our mission is to facilitate exploration of the natural, cultural, and artistic heritage of Kodiak Island and surrounding communities to create opportunities for the public to discover, share, and exchange knowledge using the collections and resources made available through the operation of the Kodiak History Museum.

Partner Roles

Partnership Administrative Team

The Partnership Administrative Team includes staff from the Kodiak Island Borough School District, Alutiiq Museum, Kodiak Arts Council, Kodiak College and the Alaska State Council on the Arts (ASCA). ASCA serves as the grantor and intermediary in this project, offering support through the hiring of a Project Manager, while also working to connect the Munartet team with a statewide audience through existing arts education programs and partners.

Pre-Service Cohort Members

Selected by the Kodiak College, the pre-service cohort includes individuals currently enrolled in teaching programs through University of Alaska, paraprofessionals currently under contract at KIBSD, and high school students enrolled in a dual credit course, EDFN A101 Introduction to Education. Members should have a strong desire to teach in and through the arts and culture in Kodiak.

In-Service Cohort Members

Selected by the Kodiak Island Borough School District, the in-service cohort includes new to service teachers currently in their first five years of the profession. Members should have a strong desire to teach in and through the arts and culture in Kodiak.

Teaching Artists

Selected by the Kodiak Arts Council, teaching artists are established local artists with a strong background in education, specifically through KIBSD/KAC teaching artist training, Sum’ Arts program leadership, and/or Artist in Residency programs in Kodiak classrooms. They will serve as artistic coaches to cohort members, helping to bring more confidence and competence to arts integrated teaching.

Culture Bearers

Selected by the Alutiiq Museum, culture bearers are community members with demonstrated knowledge and practice of Alutiiq culture. They will serve as artistic and cultural mentors to cohort members, helping to bring more confidence and competence to arts and culture integrated teaching.

Elders

Selected by the Alutiiq Museum, Elders will serve as vital links to Alutiiq culture and history, providing first hand insight to cohort members as they bring cultural focus to general academics.

Mentor Teachers / Strategy Keepers

Selected by the Kodiak Island Borough School District, mentor teachers and strategy keepers are seasoned, tenured teachers with a strong background in the arts and creative approaches to general education. They serve as mentors to all cohort members.

Munartet Learning Community

This is the general term used to describe everyone listed above, all key players promoting the mission of increasing educators’ confidence and competence to teach in and through the arts and culture in Kodiak.
